Thermal Energy Performance Simulation of a Residential Building Retrofitted with Passive Design Strategies: A Case Study in Mexico

High energy consumption as a result of an inefficient design has both economic and environmental repercussions throughout the life cycle building. In Mexico, residential sector is third-largest final consumer, therefore improving performance existing buildings considered effective method in achieving savings. Moreover, Mexico warm climate regions predominate, which impacts consumption. This article examines linked, single-family house located hot-humid city Villahermosa, Tabasco (México). DesignBuilder software was used to conduct thermal simulation building (base case) evaluate energy-saving potentials by implementing different passive strategies. As result, annual electricity base case decreased maximum 2.0% with strategy exterior windows, 4.9% walls and, 13.7% reduction roofs, latter being enclosure greatest achieved. Nevertheless, adaptation proposal strategies, whose results represented highest savings, accomplished total 23.5% payback period 5.8 years.
